Midsize Trucks Are Winning in 2026

Midsize Trucks Are Winning in 2026

While full-size truck sales soften, midsize trucks are thriving in 2026. We break down Q2 sales data for the midsize trucks segment.

The Truck market has seen a reduction in sales compared to last year, yet despite this the midsize segment is quietly having a moment even if it’s not as grand as 2025.

In a market that’s been overall soft this year, midsize trucks are one fo the few bright spots; and the Q2 2026 numbers (courtesy of TFLTruck) make that pretty clear.

Here’s how the segment is shaking out:

•  Toyota Tacoma: 74,585 units (+4.98% year-over-year)

•  Chevrolet Colorado: 26,097 units (down slightly, but GM combined is up)

•  GMC Canyon: 11,272 units (+21.9%)

•  Nissan Frontier: 21,690 units (+34.6% — the biggest gainer)

•  Ford Ranger: 16,294 units (down 9.8%)

•  Honda Ridgeline: 12,510 units (down 6.2%)

•  Jeep Gladiator: 8,946 units (down significantly)

Overall, the midsize truck segment is holding steady or growing while many other segments are declining. The Tacoma continues to dominate, but the real story is the strong gains from the Nissan Frontier and GMC Canyon.

Why Midsize Trucks Are Thriving

Several factors are working in their favor right now:

•  Better fuel economy than full-size trucks (especially with hybrids like the Tacoma)

•  Lower price of entry — you can still get a very capable truck without crossing into $50k+ territory as quickly

•  Real capability without the bulk — easier to maneuver, park, and live with daily

•  Strong value in a market where full-size trucks keep getting more expensive

People are realizing they don’t need a full-size truck for most tasks, and the current crop of midsize trucks (especially the refreshed Tacoma, Ranger, and Colorado) are genuinely excellent.

The Zealot Take

This isn’t just a temporary blip. We’re seeing a real shift where buyers are choosing midsize trucks over full-size ones.

The midsize segment is winning because it offers the best balance of capability, efficiency, and price in today’s market. Full-size trucks still have their place (especially for heavy towing), but for a huge percentage of buyers, midsize is the smarter choice right now.
