Jeep's JL-2A Is the Rubicon That Remembers 1945

Jeep's 2027 Wrangler JL-2A dresses a Rubicon in 1945 CJ-2A colors and a first-ever tan Wrangler cabin.

Zealots, for $115 more than a similarly equipped Rubicon, Jeep will sell you the civilian Jeep's origin story on modern bones. Orange wheels, a tan cabin, a little farm scene on the tailgate, and every piece of Rubicon hardware that actually matters on a trail.

That last part is why I'm not rolling my eyes. Plenty of heritage specials are a paint code and a decal. The 2027 Wrangler JL-2A keeps the lockers, the disconnect and the 33s. It's a Rubicon wearing its great-grandfather's colors, not a costume over a Sport.

The CJ-2A in one paragraph

In July 1945, Willys-Overland took the formula from the military Willys MB and pointed it at farms, ranches and job sites. The result was the CJ-2A, the first Jeep built specifically for civilians and the start of the "CJ" (Civilian Jeep) name. It came out of Toledo, Ohio, with a tailgate, a rear power takeoff to run farm equipment, bigger headlights and the seven-slot grille we still argue about. It also came in some genuinely loud colors, like Harvest Tan with Sunset Red wheels and Pasture Green with Autumn Yellow wheels 1. Modern Wranglers still roll out of Toledo 6, so this one's got a real hometown.

What's actually in the package

Jeep calls it the 11th drop in its Twelve 4 Twelve series, offered as a two-door or four-door 1 2. Here's what you get:

  • Wheels: exclusive 17-inch retro-style wheels painted Joose (orange), a nod to those Sunset Red originals, wrapped in 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrains, plus orange tow hooks front and rear. Honestly, this is the whole look.
  • Colors: Gobi (a modern take on Harvest Tan) leads on the two-door and '41 (a military-style green) on the four-door, with Bright White, Sting Gray, Ghost and Joose also offered. Fender flares and the three-piece hardtop are body color, and the grille gets Dark Metallic Grey accents 1.
  • Interior: this is the part I'm most excited about. It's the first Wrangler cabin that isn't basically black with accents: Nappa Heritage Tan leather seats, Bison Brown door panels and console, and Desert Orange stitching. Add a Willys-Overland shifter medallion, vent graphics with the seven-slot grille and a Willys silhouette, and a swing-gate plaque that recreates the CJ-2A's dash data-plate art 1 5.
  • Useful stuff: the front TrailCam with integrated washer and the Convenience Group (remote start, auto-dimming mirror, garage door opener) come standard 1.

The tradeoff nobody puts in a press release: a tan Nappa cabin in a vehicle built to have its doors off is a commitment. I love it. I also know what my floor mats look like after a spring trail day.

Rubicon hardware that stays

Jeep's release says the JL-2A is "built on the Wrangler Rubicon platform" and is Trail Rated 1. It doesn't list the hardware, so here's how I checked. Car and Driver reports the JL-2A keeps electronic front and rear lockers, the electronic sway-bar disconnect and a 4.10 rear axle ratio 3. Jeep's own 2026 Rubicon window sticker lists exactly that kit as standard: Tru-Lok front and rear, front disconnecting stabilizer bar, 4.10 rear axle, Rock-Trac 4WD with a 4:1 low range, Dana 44 front and a full-floating Dana M220 rear 6.

You're not trading articulation or traction for a cute interior. Powertrain choices are less clear. Car and Driver reports the 3.6-liter V6 (285 hp) or 2.0-liter turbo four (270 hp), with a six-speed manual or eight-speed auto 3. Jeep's release doesn't say. So treat that as reported until the order guide lands.

The pricing math vs. a base Rubicon

Jeep's numbers: the JL-2A package is $4,995, and Jeep says it delivers its unique content for $115 more than a similarly equipped Rubicon 1. The key words are "similarly equipped." The $115 delta is against a Rubicon already optioned with the comparable content, not against a stripper Rubicon. Against a bare Rubicon, you're paying the full $4,995.

Jeep hasn't published 2027 Rubicon base pricing. Outlets are guessing: Car and Driver puts the JL-2A "likely around $53,000," and MotorTrend says $53,400 for the two-door 3 5. In Canada, the package is reported at $6,995 CAD 4.

Who this is actually for

If you were already speccing a Rubicon with the TrailCam, remote start and a leather cabin, this is close to a free upgrade in personality. You get the same rock-ready running gear, plus an interior that doesn't look like every other Wrangler in the trailhead lot.

It ships on 33s, so if you're building for factory 35s, check the order guide first. It's also not for someone who wants the cheapest path into lockers. A plain Rubicon does that job for $4,995 less. And it's a limited run. Jeep says "limited quantities" without a number 2, so I wouldn't wait around on this one.

Real talk: I've watched a lot of "heritage" Jeeps that were mostly stickers. This one put the history in the colors and the cabin and left the axles alone. That's the right way around.

So, Zealots: Gobi or '41? And would you keep the tan Nappa clean or just let it earn its patina? Tell me in the comments.
