The newest Bronco recall is small: 2,711 trucks, a free fix, and no crashes or injuries Ford knows of. Easy to scroll past. But it's the ninth NHTSA recall on the 2026 Bronco, a list that now runs from fire-risk wiring to engines to an airbag.
Numbers in this story come from NHTSA's recall database, checked October 16, 2026 at 3:50 PM MDT. Recall populations and the count can change as Ford files amendments or new campaigns, so they may keep growing.
What's wrong this time
The campaign is NHTSA 26V580000, Ford number 26S64, filed September 9, 2026. It covers 2026 Broncos built between June 27 and July 26, 2026. On those trucks, the mounting bracket for the right-hand side curtain airbag may carry a metal burr that can tear the curtain when it deploys. Ford's filing says a tear "may cause faster curtain deflation." NHTSA's consequence line: "A torn air bag may fail to properly restrain an occupant during a crash, increasing the risk of injury."1
The cause is a skipped step. Per Ford's Part 573 report, a Tier 2 supplier "skipped the deburring stage due to a production layout change." Ford estimates all 2,711 trucks have the burr. A supplier lot test caught a 20mm tear on July 16, and Ford issued a stop-ship on July 21. As of August 18, Ford knew of no warranty claims or owner complaints. There's no warning sign before a deployment.2
Ford's testing found the trucks still meet the federal airbag standards with the tear, but showed "degraded performance" of the curtain in a crash. That's why it's a recall.2

How it stacks with the summer campaigns
Two of the nine matter most to most owners:
- Wiring fire risk (26V468000): 565,691 2021 through 2026 Broncos and Bronco Raptors, built September 23, 2020 to June 28, 2026. The engine bay harness can chafe and short. Ford counted 15 incidents as of July 13 and no known accidents or injuries. Dealers add protective sheathing for free.36
- Pistons (26V548000): 10,001 vehicles across five Ford nameplates, including 1,062 2026 Broncos with the 2.3L built February 16 to April 14, 2026. Dealers inspect and replace the long block if needed, but that remedy isn't expected until December 2026.4
The other six: an instrument cluster that may fail at startup, an overheating rearview camera module, a front seat pivot bolt, wrong tire labels, an engine failure campaign, and fender flares that can detach.5 Many cover narrow build windows, so no truck gets all nine. Ford says Broncos built after June 28 got improved harness covering, so a truck in the airbag window may fall outside the wiring recall. The VIN decides.
What to do this week
- Run your VIN at NHTSA or Ford's recall page. Airbag recall VINs have been searchable since September 10, and the lookup shows every open campaign at once.
- Read the interim letter for what it is. Planned for September 15, it's a heads-up, not a repair. Remedy letters are planned for October 30, 2026.2
- Get on the dealer's list now. The fix is a free rework that increases the space between the bracket and the airbag. Nothing gets replaced.
- No park-it order. NHTSA lists no do-not-drive or park-outside advisory for this one.
- Clear everything at once. Ask the dealer to close any other open campaigns too. Ford: 1-866-436-7332, quote 26S64.
What it means off pavement
The right-side curtain protects your passenger, the person who spots you through the rocks. Its job is to cushion heads in a side hit, and Ford tested it against ejection-mitigation requirements, the part of the job that counts in a roll. A fast desert road or an off-camber ledge can hand you either. The truck drives the same until it's fixed, so don't let the appointment slide. If you've had roof-rail or pillar trim off for lights or radio wiring, tell the dealer.
The pattern, and the Wrangler and 4Runner question
As of the same October 16 check, NHTSA lists three recalls for the 2026 Jeep Wrangler and two for the 2026 Toyota 4Runner, against nine for the 2026 Bronco.5 Raw counts don't weigh severity or volume, and several Bronco campaigns are shared across Ford's lineup. Still, nine is a lot of service-drive visits.
It isn't proof the Bronco is a bad truck; this airbag issue was caught in testing before any owner reports. For wrenchers, nearly all these remedies are dealer-only rework, not driveway jobs. For used 2026 shoppers and sellers, recalls follow the VIN. A printout showing every campaign closed is the cleanest way to protect resale value.
