Rivian R2: The $45K Electric SUV Built for Adventure (Archive)
Rivian reveals the R2 midsize SUV — a $45K EV built for everyday use and off-road adventure, boasting 300 miles of range and sleek Rivian design.
Rivian just pulled the wraps off its next big move: the all-new R2 midsize SUV, designed to make Rivian’s blend of adventure and electric performance far more accessible. Slotting below the R1S, the R2 takes Rivian’s signature rugged design language and scales it into a five-seat package meant for the daily grind and weekend getaways.
2026 Rivian R2: Key Details
Rivian says the R2 will come with two battery options, with the larger pack targeting over 300 miles of range and the quickest setup capable of 0–60 mph in under 3 seconds. Starting at around $45,000, it’s by far Rivian’s most affordable EV yet — and that price point could put real pressure on Tesla’s Model Y and the upcoming Chevy Equinox EV.
How’d they do it? The R2 rides on a new, simplified platform that slashes complexity using high-pressure die-cast components, a structural battery pack that doubles as the vehicle floor, and a smarter overall build philosophy. The result: fewer parts, less cost, and faster production.

Inside, the R2 keeps Rivian’s signature blend of utility and adventure. Power rear quarter windows, a fully dropping rear glass, and flat-folding seats make it an easy companion for camping, road trips, or gear-hauling weekends.
Production will kick off at Rivian’s Normal, Illinois plant — the same facility that builds the R1 lineup — to save on costs and speed up delivery timelines. Rivian plans to boost annual capacity there to 215,000 units to meet expected demand.
Preorders & Launch
Reservations for the R2 are now open with a $100 refundable deposit, and deliveries are expected to start in early 2026. If Rivian can keep the cost down while maintaining its trademark build quality and performance, the R2 might be the EV that brings the brand to the masses.
AutoZealot Take: Rivian’s R2 was the moment the company proved it could scale. If they deliver on the $45K promise, this model could redefine the entry-level adventure EV market.
