(Archive) Rivian Surprises With R3, R3X Electric SUVs

Rivian shocked the EV world with the R2 launch — and then unveiled the smaller, more affordable R3 and high-performance R3X SUVs. Here’s what we know.

Rivian R3 and R3X compact electric SUVs displayed together, showcasing their off-road design and sleek body lines.
Rivian’s surprise R3 and R3X reveal proved the brand isn’t slowing down on innovation — or ambition.

Rivian shook up the EV world during the long-awaited R2 reveal, but it didn’t stop there. The company also unveiled two unexpected models — the R3 and the performance-focused R3X — smaller SUVs that still promise Rivian’s trademark mix of off-road grit, modern design, and clever utility.

Compact SUVs, Big Capability

The R3 is Rivian’s play for an even more affordable, compact EV SUV. Despite its smaller footprint, it carries Rivian’s signature hatch-style design, sporty silhouette, and practical interior layout — aimed at maximizing space without sacrificing athletic looks.

Meanwhile, the R3X takes things a step further, pushing performance on and off the pavement. Unique wheels, bold aero elements, and enhanced drivetrain setups help distinguish it as a more aggressive, adventure-ready option.

Powertrain and Tech

Like the R2, both the R3 and R3X ride on Rivian’s in-house platform with multiple motor configurations:

  • Single-Motor RWD
  • Dual-Motor AWD
  • Tri-Motor (two rear, one front)

The most powerful setups are expected to rocket from 0–60 mph in under 3 seconds.

Each model will also use Rivian’s new 4695 battery cell, delivering improved energy density and over 300 miles of range per charge.

On the tech side, Rivian is introducing its upgraded perception stack: 11 cameras, five radars, and a next-gen computing system to boost autonomous driving features.

Price and Availability

  • R2: ~$45,000 starting price
  • R3: Expected to come in below the R2, making it Rivian’s most accessible SUV yet
  • R3X: Performance-oriented, premium pricing above the R3

Deliveries will roll out in stages, beginning with the R2 before Rivian scales into the R3 and R3X. Global availability will follow North American launch.

AutoZealot Take: Rivian just reminded the EV industry why it’s one to watch. The R3 and R3X hit that sweet spot between adventure and accessibility — and if Rivian can nail production, it might just carve out a loyal following that Tesla can’t reach.
